Lizzy House Meadow Tour - Registrations Open!

As I shared on Wednesday, Lizzy House is bringing her Meadow Quilt to Australia and New Zealand later this year. Lizzy has never released a pattern for the Meadow quilt preferring to personally teach the process. This is the first and likely last time that Lizzy will be teaching the Meadow in Australia so it’s a rare chance to learn to make one for yourself. The Aussie classes will be six hour workshops, including a lunch break, in which you will choose fabrics, learn the process of making the Meadow block and finish 2-3 blocks.

Lizzy will be teaching in four major Australian cities – Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth – and in Wellington, New Zealand throughout late September and early October. The classes and their locations are listed below:

Class Schedule:

Brisbane - Tuesday, 22nd of September at the Lavalla Centre in Paddington (6:30pm-8:30pm lecture - cost $30) hosted by Peppermint Stitches
              – Wednesday, 23^rd of September, at the Lavalla Centre in Paddington (10:30am-4:30pm class) hosted by Peppermint Stitches

Sydney – Saturday, 26^th of September at HobbySew Top Ryde, Top Ryde City Shopping Centre - Level 2, Shop MM20 (9:30am-3:30pm class)

Perth – Saturday, 3^rd of October at Wembley Community Centre, 40 Alexander St, Wembley (10am-5pm class) hosted by Perth Modern Quilt Guild

Melbourne – Saturday, 10^th of October at Cutting Cloth, 282 Wingrove Street, Fairfield (10am-4pm class)

The Perth class is being run through the Perth MQG. Registrations will be open to members later this week and to the wider public on Saturday,18th of July.

Registration for the Melbourne and Sydney classes is now also open! The total cost for the class is $200 and is payable as a $45 deposit at the time of registration and $155 final payment one month before your class. To register for either the Sydney or Melbourne class please fill out this Google form (link provided below).

Upon filling out the form you will receive an email confirming your place in the class (or on the waiting list if the class is booked out). Registrations will be processed in the order they are received.

To confirm your booking you will need to pay a non-refundable deposit of $45 within 7 days of registering for the class. You may choose to pay this via bank deposit (preferred) or via PayPal and bank details or a PayPal invoice will be emailed to you. If you do not pay your deposit within 7 days your place in the class will not be held for you. It will be offered to someone else.

The remainder of your booking fee will be due one month before your class and you will be sent an email reminder including bank details or a PayPal invoice as preferenced by you.

In the event that a class becomes booked out, a waiting list will be created. If anyone drops out, those on the waiting list will be offered the vacated space in the order in which they joined the waiting list. If the waiting list for a particular class becomes large enough a second class in that city may be organised. This will be at the organiser’s discretion and is not guaranteed.

If you drop out from the class your $45 deposit will not be refunded.

Questions you may have:

Why do I need to pay a deposit?

There are two reasons for the deposit.  The first is so that only people who are really committed to coming to the class sign up.  The second is that to book venues for the classes and to fund Lizzy’s flights we will need money! The deposits we collect from attendees will allow us to do these things.

What happens if I have paid a deposit and I can no longer attend the class, or the class is cancelled?

If you cannot attend the class, or the class is cancelled, you will not get your deposit back.

Is this class guaranteed to go ahead?

No.  These classes could be cancelled for a variety of reasons including lack of interest. However at this stage we have no reason to suspect that any of the classes will be cancelled.

Who should come to this class?

The Meadow quilt involves reasonably complex curved piecing.  Participants will have experience piecing quilts, and may have worked with curved piecing before.  You must have an open mind and be excited to learn something new!

You will need to bring your own sewing machine and other quilting equipment (cutting mat, rulers, rotary cutter, etc).

What does the class involve?

This class is a six hour workshop (with a lunch break).  In this class you will choose your fabrics, learn about the Meadow and make 2-3 blocks

What about accommodation?

The cost of the class does not include any accommodation.  If you are travelling to attend the class you will need to arrange your own accommodation at your own expense.

There’s been a rumour going around that Lizzy House will be bringing her Meadow quilt Down Under later this year. It’s my great pleasure to announce that the rumours are true! Adrianne and I have been busily arranging classes in our respective countries and are excited to release the class schedule today.

The Meadow Tour Down Under:

Brisbane – Wednesday, 23^rd of September

Sydney – Saturday, 26^th of September

Perth – Saturday, 3^rd of October

Melbourne – Saturday, 10^th of October

Wellington – Thursday 15^th and Friday 16^th of October (two day workshop)

A Lovely Year of Finishes - February Goal

Well January zoomed by so fast that I forgot to blog about or link up my January finish. Which makes me super sad as I did finish it and gave it a mini photo shoot and everything! I'll give it a post of its own later but here's a little sneak peek of it and then we'll move on to my February goal.

For February's goal I've chosen this fun little hexie project I've been working on. It's a gift for someone who loves red and orange and I added blue for balance and pink on a whim. I think these colours will be well received!

Rather than spreading the colours randomly I laid them out in a gradient from darker blue through paler blue, pink, red and around to orange. I love it so much!! I may need to make another...

The hexies are English Paper Pieced and each side finishes at one inch. I like to thread baste my hexies and sew them together with a whip stitch. The panel is already hand pieced and machine quilted with closely spaced straight lines which is (and I think will always be) my favourite way to quilt! I love the texture it creates. All that's left is to turn the panel into a little throw pillow and with a freshly serviced sewing machine and a new zipper in stock that won't take me long at all!

Raspberry Kiss Pillow

Last year I joined the Aussie Handmade Birthday Club. I was assigned to a group of 12 ladies each with a designated month (that may or may not correspond with our birth month depending on availability!) and every month each member makes a gift for the birthday girl. I wanted to share what I made for our January birthday girl, Kelly.

Amongst other things, Kelly said she likes rainbows, Cotton and Steel basics and Carrie Bloomston. I pounced on these likes and used Kelly's gift as a chance to try out the raspberry kiss block designed by Rachel of Wooden Spoon Quilts. It's a gorgeous block and as long as you follow all Rachel's tips in the tutorial you'll have no trouble! I might have gotten carried away without reading the whole tutorial and spent some time with my stitch unpick...

Despite the time spent unpicking I really enjoyed making these blocks and finishing them into a pillow. To quilt I used my walking foot and straight lines but I turned the pillow front as I went along to make a pattern of diamonds between all the pluses. Complicated to explain but it turned out lovely. The picture below gives a closer view of the quilting.

For the back I used a Carrie Bloomston print from her line Collage. It's a nice bright, bold print and I like the way it tied in with some of the colours on the front

The best part is the birthday was thrilled with her gift. And I'll be revisiting this block soon as I may have cut out pieces for a second set of blocks at the same time as I cut the first.  Less time spent refolding fabric!

Bec's Little House in the City

I mentioned in my goals post that this year I'm planning to make the Metro Area quilt from Patchwork City. I've been so excited about this book since I first caught a glimpse of the cover and it has not disappointed. It's filled with 75 modern quilt blocks that go together to make a gorgeous sampler quilt. I've spent the last 12 months hoarding collecting Lizzy House fabrics and decided this would be the perfect project to delve into my collection and start chopping.

So far I've made two blocks. I've decided to work my way through the book from beginning to end making each block as I go so I don't leave all the harder ones until last. This block is called Forest Park.

And this one is Donut Shop.

I'm so excited with how they're looking so far! I've had this thing in my head for so long I was begining to doubt it would work, but these two have turned out better than I imagined and fuelled my enthusiasm no end. I'm aiming to finish a block or two a week and have at least a finished top by the end of the year. So far I'm on track... :-P

A Lovely Year of Finishes - January Goal

I'm keen to link up with A Lovely Year of Finishes this year to help me stay on track with projects and finish up some of those I've been procrastinating about. January's goal was an easy one to pick! There are few smaller projects that need finishing this month but the most urgent is my Schnitzel and Boo Mini Quilt Swap mini quilt. The good news is I've already finished the quilt top!

 My partner had an orange peel quilt in her inspiration mosaic and said she liked colour and novelty prints. In my mind you cant go past Lizzy House for novelty prints so I dug into my stash and picked a rainbow of fussy cuts (largely Lizzy House prints) and colourful blenders for the orange peels.

I raw edge appliqued them onto low volume squares using the blanket stitch on my sewing machine. They went together so much more quickly than I thought they might! I arranged them in an almost rainbow gradient as I preferred that over a random layout. Now I'm just searching for the perfect backing and binding...

I'm ridiculously pleased with how it turned out. I kind of want to keep it for myself. That's a good sign, right? Linking up to A Lovely Year of Finishes

A Fresh Start!

I always like the start of a New Year! I like the chance to review what's been and make plans for what's to come. It's refreshing!

I have some exciting plans for this year and plenty of space left for new thoughts and projects as they arise. I wanted to thrash out a few of my ideas here. It will be fun at the end of the year to see where I've come from, what I've achieved and how I've grown... and how much my plans have changed along the way!

Patchwork City Quilt - I got Elizabeth Hartman's book Patchwork City for Christmas and I'm planning to delve into my Lizzy House stash to make this one. I've made one block so far and I am stoked with how it looks and how fun it was to make! Hoping to make at least a block a week - two if I can!

Big Boy Quilt - my son turns two this year and I really want to make him a twin sized quilt as he'll be in a big bed before I know it. I had chosen a design for this but have recently gotten distracted by a different pattern. Trying to decide which he'll like best...

Swaps - I'm currently signed up for four swaps all of which ship by early April so plenty of fun to be had on that front! As an aside, much as I love swaps I've told my hubby he mustn't let me sign up for any more until after April... I need to keep time aside for my selfish sewing!

The Bee Hive Quilting Bee - as the bee I'm currently in ends this month I thought it was safe to join another - which starts next month. Perfect! I loved my bee experience last year and am going to sorely miss it - Aussie Modern Instabee Hive 5 ladies are the best!!

Sydney Modern Quilt Group - I'm planning to join! I want real life quilt friends as well as online ones!

A Lovely Year of Finishes - planning to link up and be motivated to finish at least one something every month!

There are plenty more ideas bobbing around in my head but these are the ones most prominent right now. Here's hoping this is a year of inspiration, exploration and friendship... and regular blogging!
